One Teaching Assistant per 130 Pupils: The Staffing Gap Between Dubai’s Fee Tiers

For young children, the number of adults in the room is one of the most practical measures of a school, and one of the least visible in a fee table. Across 194 Dubai private schools that publish their staffing, the median school has one teaching assistant for every 55 pupils. That figure hides a steep gradient. In schools charging under AED 20,000 a year, it is one for every 130. In the AED 60–80K tier it is one for every 32.

Fees buy more adults per child

Measured as teaching assistants per 100 pupils, the AED 60–80K tier has about 4.1 times the coverage of the cheapest tier. The rise is steep through the lower and middle tiers and then levels off: above roughly AED 40,000, extra fees buy little additional assistant time.

Teaching assistants are only part of the picture. Counting teachers and assistants together, the cheapest tier has a median of 7.1 adults per 100 pupils against 10.8 in the AED 60–80K tier. The gap in assistants is proportionally much wider than the gap in teachers: one assistant for every 7.6 teachers at the bottom of the market, against one for every 2.5 in the best-staffed tier.

It is not just a curriculum effect

Curricula differ in both fees and staffing models, so the gradient could simply reflect curriculum. It does not, or not only. Within British-curriculum schools, the largest group at 86 schools, the cheaper half has 1.6 assistants per 100 pupils and the dearer half 3.1.

Higher-rated schools employ more assistants, and charge more

Assistant coverage also rises with the KHDA rating. That does not mean assistants cause better ratings. Higher-rated schools tend to charge more, and fees fund staff. Read this chart as a description of where assistants are, not a recipe for a better grade.

What these counts cannot tell you. They are whole-school headcounts, not full-time equivalents, and they do not show which phase assistants work in. Schools can concentrate assistants in particular phases, so the figure for your child’s class could be much higher or lower than the school median. Every school in the sample reports at least one assistant.

Four questions to ask about classroom support

Sources and method

Pupil, teacher and teaching-assistant headcounts come from KHDA-sourced fields in DubaiSchools.ai’s open dataset. We include 194 of 241 indexed schools: those with positive pupil and teacher counts, a published assistant count and an average annual fee. We compute assistants per 100 pupils for each school and report medians within each group, so a few very large schools do not dominate. Fee tiers use each school’s average published fee across grades. The figures are descriptive and do not measure the quality of support. See the methodology.
