Dubai Schools Are Better at Caring Than at Self-Criticism: What KHDA’s Judgements Show
A KHDA rating is one word, but it sits on top of many separate judgements. Line those judgements up across Dubai and a clear pattern appears. Schools are at their strongest on how they look after children: 75% are Very good or Outstanding for protection, care and support. They are at their weakest on knowing how good they are: only 37% reach that level for self-evaluation and improvement planning.
Where Dubai schools rate highest, and lowest
The chart ranks each KHDA judgement by the share of schools rated Very good or Outstanding on it. Judgements published for fewer than 100 schools in our dataset are left out.
The top of the chart is pastoral: personal development, safeguarding and care, the relationship with parents. The bottom is managerial: leadership, teaching and, last of all, self-evaluation. In plain terms, Dubai’s private schools are generally better at being kind places than at being self-critical ones.
Measured against each school’s own grade
A system-wide average can hide what happens inside a single school, so the next chart compares each judgement with the same school’s overall rating. Our companion piece on care and teaching against the headline grade looks at the same comparison from the teaching side.
147 of 203 schools rate higher for care and support than they do overall, and none rate lower. Self-evaluation runs the other way: it trails the overall grade at 18 schools and beats it at only 8. Of the five leadership judgements, self-evaluation is the lowest (or joint lowest) at 174 of 199 schools.
| Leadership judgement | Lowest or joint lowest of the five |
|---|---|
| Self-evaluation and improvement planning | 174 of 199 schools (87%) |
| Leadership | 150 of 199 schools (75%) |
| Governance | 139 of 199 schools (70%) |
| Management and resources | 100 of 199 schools (50%) |
| Partnership with parents | 40 of 199 schools (20%) |
Why self-evaluation is the one to watch
Self-evaluation sounds like paperwork. It is not. It is KHDA’s judgement on whether a school’s leaders can see their own weaknesses accurately and plan to fix them. A school that sees its weaknesses clearly is better placed to fix them before the next inspection than one that does not. That makes it a useful forward-looking signal in a report, and one that is easy to skip past.
Governance deserves a second look for a related reason. 11 schools are rated Weak for governance, and 3 of them are still rated Good or better overall. A Weak judgement for the people overseeing the head teacher is not visible in the headline grade, but it is the kind of weakness that can show up in the next one.
Three questions for a school visit
- “What did your last self-evaluation get wrong?” A confident, specific answer is a good sign. A blank look is not.
- “What changed after your last inspection?” Ask for the improvement plan, not the marketing summary.
- “Who holds the principal to account?” Especially worth asking where governance is rated below the overall grade.
Sources and method
KHDA overall ratings and judgement-level ratings come from DubaiSchools.ai’s open dataset. We include schools with a current KHDA rating and a published rating for the judgement in question, and drop judgements available for fewer than 100 schools. KHDA’s scale is compared as ordered bands (Weak, Acceptable, Good, Very good, Outstanding). “Lowest or joint lowest” uses the five leadership and management judgements, which are published together, for the 199 schools that have all five.
