Does an Older Dubai School Rate Better? 217 Schools Say No

An older school is not automatically a better school. Across 217 rated Dubai schools with a founding year, the relationship between school age and KHDA band is r = 0.00—essentially zero. Age describes institutional history; it does not substitute for inspection evidence.

The middle-aged cohorts are strongest, not the oldest

Schools aged 10–19 years have the highest Good-or-better share in this cut, followed by those aged 20–39 years. The 40-plus group is much cheaper but has a wider quality spread. That pattern is descriptive, not a life-cycle rule: curriculum, ownership, fee model and which schools survived all differ by cohort.

Age has a much clearer relationship with price

The median average fee peaks in the 10–19-year cohort at AED 53,681. Schools aged 40 years or more have a median of AED 11,147. Older institutions often serve long-established communities and occupy a different curriculum and operating-cost mix from newer premium campuses.

Why age fails as a quality shortcut

What to ask instead of “How old is the school?”

Ask how long the current principal and phase leaders have been in place, read the last three KHDA judgements, check enrolment direction and visit the facilities that matter to your child. Heritage can be a strength; it is not an outcome measure.

Sources and method

Founding year, current KHDA rating, average fee and pupil count come from DubaiSchools.ai’s open dataset. We calculate school age as 2026 minus established year. The rating correlation includes only recognised KHDA bands and uses the five ordered bands from Weak (1) to Outstanding (5). Uninspected schools are excluded from quality percentages but retained in indexed counts and fee medians. No causal claim is made. See the methodology and rating trajectories.
