Every private school in Dubai is inspected by KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority). The inspection produces a rating: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, or Weak. But what do these ratings actually measure?
How the Inspection Works
KHDA inspectors visit each school for several days. They observe lessons, review student work, interview staff and students, analyse exam results, and assess the school's self-evaluation processes. Schools are evaluated against six performance standards.
The Rating Scale
| Rating | Schools | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Outstanding | 27 (12%) | Exceptional quality across all areas. The school consistently exceeds expectations. |
| Very Good | 55 (24%) | High quality with significant strengths. Minor areas for development. |
| Good | 79 (35%) | Meets KHDA quality standards. Solid education with clear room for improvement. |
| Acceptable | 49 (22%) | Meets minimum requirements. Significant areas need attention. |
| Weak | 2 | Below minimum standards. KHDA requires immediate improvement plans. |
Common Misconceptions
"Good means bad." This is the biggest misunderstanding. Good literally means the school meets quality standards. It is not a euphemism. The majority of schools in Dubai are rated Good, and many families are happy with them.
"Outstanding means perfect." Outstanding schools still have areas for improvement noted in their inspection reports. No school is perfect. The rating means they excel relative to the standard.
"The rating never changes." Ratings do change. 85 schools have improved their rating over the past inspection cycles. A small number have declined. The rating reflects the school's performance at the time of inspection, not a permanent label.
Beyond the Overall Rating
KHDA also rates schools on wellbeing, inclusion, and specific phase performance (Foundation Stage, Primary, Secondary). A school might be Outstanding overall but only Very Good in its Foundation Stage. These details matter if your child is entering a specific year group.
